The Renewed Life
Nov 01, 2020
There is no such thing as a halfway Christian. When we give our lives to Christ it's all or nothing. We choose life over death and live our lives in humble submission to His will.
True religion is the religion of the heart. Actions are important but what's happening in our inner life is of greater concern to God than anything else.
But I did find this: God created people to be virtuous, but they have each turned to follow their own downward path.”
The way of life winds upward for the wise, That he may turn away from hell below.
I Corinthians 1:30
But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption—
In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Who is Jesus (Colossians 1:15-20)
•The visible image of the invisible God, supreme over all creation (1:15)
•He is the creator of all things visible and invisible (1:16)
•In Him everything holds together, the worlds were framed by Him (1:17)
•He is the head of the church (1:18)
•In Him dwells the fullness of God (1:19)
•He is the Prince of Peace and Peacemaker of everything in heaven and earth by means of His blood (1:20)
And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
The influence of God's Kingdom must shape every aspect of our living.
Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
Philosophies Tied to Spiritual Powers:
•Consumerism- I have Jesus but the more material things I acquire the better I'll be
Overflows to- Greed & Idolatry
•Politicism (the political spirit)- I have Jesus but my righteousness is found in my political uprightness
Overflows to- Division & Self-righteousness
•The American Dream- I have Jesus but the more money, square feet, and success I have will bring me fulfillment.
Overflows to- The pride of life
When you came to Christ, you were “circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision—the cutting away of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.
So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality. Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.
Jesus + anything = Heresy
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT
You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.
I commend you for meddling with points of controversy as little as possible. It is abundantly easier to lose our love in that rough field than to find the truth.
