The Washington Crossing United Methodist Church started to meet in the 1830’s and was originally called the Taylorsville Methodist Episcopal Church. The original church building was located in the village of Taylorsville, a Delaware River ferry crossing between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The ferry crossing business was owned and operated by Samuel McKonkey until 1777 when it was sold to Benjamin Taylor.
On December 25, 1776 McKonkey Ferry became famous in American history. This is the Christmas Day when General George Washington and a Continental Army of 2,400 men crossed the Delaware River to attack British employed Hessian troops garrisoned in Trenton, New Jersey, about nine miles South of McKonkey Ferry. Many historians view the ensuing Battle of Trenton as the turning point of the American Revolutionary War. This victory brought hope to the new nation fighting for its independence. In January 1777, after the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, the Continental Army and George Washington went to Morristown, New Jersey to quarter for the winter.
In 1917, the town's name of Taylorsville was changed to Washington Crossing to memorialize Washington's historic crossing. In 1921 the name of the Taylorsville Methodist Episcopal Church was changed to Washington Crossing Methodist Episcopal Church.
Of possible interest, from its organization in the nineteenth century through most of the twentieth century the Washington Crossing United Methodist Church did not have a full-time pastor. Prior to 1976 Washington Crossing United Methodist Church was served by ministerial students, part-time pastors and retired pastors. In 1976 Norman J. Leve became the church’s first full-time pastor. The Washington Crossing United Methodist Church began worshipping at its current location in 1983.
In 1993, the Rev. Dr. J. Scott McDermott became the second full-time pastor of Washington Crossing United Methodist Church (also known as “The Crossing”).
In 1994 another historic event happened at Washington Crossing. During a worship service lead by Pastor Scott, the Crossing experienced a sovereign outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Many people were touched by God in 1994 and people continue to be touched today as the Crossing continues to be a church in renewal! The Lord is always welcome at the Crossing and people are encouraged to seek Him and experience His manifest presence. God’s presence is repeatedly demonstrated and evidenced by many physical and inner healings.
Lastly, as a church in renewal, the Crossing is helping people to become totally devoted disciples of Jesus Christ to impact the world. Crossing members and friends are responding to God’s call to minister in foreign lands and at home. Crossing members and friends are in missions to Africa, Europe and Asia; inner cities, college campuses, shopping centers, shopping malls, schools, and etc. for the glory of God. The Crossing is a place where since the 1830’s HisStory is in the making!
